MEF Iz... At Play: Students play sports and practice after School

By: Daria Sepahram

Nowadays where technology often keeps us glued to our chairs, engaging in sports outside of school can bring a refreshing change. Sports not only keep us fit but also provide opportunities for personal growth and memorable experiences. In this article, we delve into the stories of three people who have found their passion in sports beyond the walls of our school to give us a better understanding of how sports can have a significant impact on our lives.

Wiktoria's Orienteering Journey:

Meet Wiktoria, a ninth-grade student at our school and a determined young athlete who has been mastering orienteering since the age of six. From her early years, Wiktoria found comfort in running and training camps, honing her skills for the captivating world of orienteering. She describes orienteering as “a sport that takes racers everywhere, from the bustling cities to the peaceful forests”.

Wiktoria's achievements in orienteering show her extraordinary talent. In 2020, she competed at the Polish Championships, snatching the top spot in the classic distance, middle distance, and the relay race. The following year, Wiktoria continued her winning streak, securing two more championship titles. Her dedication and commitment led her to claim three more Polish Championships in 2022. She transitioned from the W12 category to W14, competing with older athletes and proving her talent.

A Journey through Dance and Gymnastics:

Among those exploring various sports outside of school is me, Daria Sepahram. I started with contemporary dancing. Over four years of involvement in the vibrant dance scene in Izmir, I got a dancing license and actively took part in competitions. However, a new passion in me soon emerged—the desire to shine in gymnastics, with a particular focus on tumbling skills. By -shifting sports, I found new inspirations while still building on my dancing skills. Now, I am attending control contests and have won two medals, my determination is evident.

Varvara's Fencing Journey:

Varvara, a tenth-grade student, discovered her love for fencing four years ago. With exceptional skills and a place in a well-known Russian fencing team, Varvara's journey has taken her to numerous competitions. Her achievements not only caught the attention of her friends and coaches but also led to an amazing opportunity—an invitation to participate in a movie as a fencing actress. Varvara's story shows us that sports can open unexpected doors for remarkable experiences.

Eizrian's Basketball experience:

Eizrian, a dedicated tenth-grade student at our school, has been passionately pursuing basketball for the past four years outside of school. Currently, he is a proud member of the Mavisehir team in Izmir, where he has been representing his club for one year. When asked about his experience, Eizrian shares, 'I love my basketball club. Not only does it teach me valuable lessons on how to become successful on the court, but it also provides me with incredible friendships outside of the school grounds.' Eizrian's commitment and enthusiasm for basketball serve as an inspiration to his friends and showcase the benefits of chasing one's passion.

Eva's Soccer path:

Eva, a seventh-grade student in our school, is a passionate football player outside of school. Ever since she moved to Turkey this year during the summer, she continued pursuing her love for football. Previously, Eva played football back in her home country of Canada, and now she has joined the Besiktas team in Izmir. What makes Eva's journey incredible is that she is the only girl in an all-boys team, which shows her determination and skill. When asked about her experience, Eva expressed her love for the team, saying, "I am thrilled to be a part of Besiktas because it is not only my favorite team in my football school but also represents my love for the national team." Eva's dedication and enthusiasm for football make her an inspiring athlete on and off the field.

The Impact of Sports and Outdoor Activities:

These extraordinary stories highlight sports' enormous role in building talent and forming individuals outside of the classroom. Sports outside of school provide vital life lessons ranging from self-discipline and determination to teamwork and flexibility. A physically and mentally active lifestyle is also beneficial for physical and mental well-being, it supports the development of important abilities that go well beyond the sports field.

Uncovering the stories of Wiktoria, the adventurous orienteer, my exploration of dance and gymnastics, and Varvara's exciting journey through fencing, we find inspiration to embrace sports beyond our school. By engaging in outdoor activities, we unlock personal growth, create lifelong memories, and find passions that can shape our lives. So let's step out, dive into the world of sports, and discover the wonders that wait for us beyond the hours of school.
